Slight decline in detection but fatalities increase

There was no let up in COVID-19 fatalities in Nagaland even as the state witnessed a slight decline in detection during the week July 24-30.   

Nagaland reported 24 COVID-19 deaths, which happened to be the highest weekly toll since mid-June. Dimapur reported 12 deaths, 6 in Mokokchung, 2 each in Tuensang and Kohima and 1 in Kiphire. 

The state Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme’s (IDSP) weekly COVID roundup informed that a 9-day old infant was among the 24 deaths. It reminded, “As children cannot be vaccinated for Covid-19 yet, vaccination of parents, elders and teachers will reduce transmission to children along with adherence to Covid-19 personal safety measures.”

It further noted a 60 percent jump in hospitalisation of COVID cases— 128 admissions against the previous week’s 80. It happened to be the highest since June 5-11. Dimapur reported the highest number of admissions 50, followed by 40 in Kohima and 16 in Mokokchung. 

Cases vs recovery
The tally of cases for the week was 597, falling from the 640 cases previously. Dimapur reported the number of cases at 201, followed by Kohima- 173 and Mokokchung- 99, while the case-count was below 50 in each of the other districts. The week’s case-count in Mokokchung, Tuensang, Mon and Peren was more than previous week’s. 

Meanwhile, there was improvement in the number of recoveries— 527 against 427 of the previous week. Dimapur, Kohima and Mokokchung reported 100-plus recoveries with Mokokchung reporting more recoveries than cases. Other districts which reported greater number of recoveries included Wokha, Longleng, Phek, Kiphire, Tuensang. 

Positivity lowers
The sample positivity rate decreased to 6 percent (out of 9457 samples) compared to 8 percent the previous week. 

Kohima reported the highest weekly sample positivity rate at 13 percent but it was lower than the previous week’s 16 percent. Other districts which reported decreased positivity included Dimapur (6 percent), Mokokchung (8 percent), Longleng (5 percent), Wokha (7 percent), Kiphire (2 percent) and Peren (3 percent). 

The positivity rate for the month of July was 7 percent, lower than the 10.3 percent recorded in June. 

Vaccination slows
The total of vaccines administered in Nagaland, as on July 30, increased to 7.67 lakh doses, while the total of people, who have received the second shot increased to 1,50,574.

But slow down was observed with only 37,653 doses administered during the week compared to the 69,599 doses of the previous week.
