Soyabean farmers trained in Niuland

Dimapur, June 27 (MExN): Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) Dimapur in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) - ICAR, Jharnapani conducted ‘Within District Farmers’ Training’ for soyabean farmers at Muga Farm School in Niuland Town on June 23.  

Resource person James Kikon, ACTO, KVK-ICAR, Jharnapani spoke on the topic ‘Cultivation Practices of Soyabean (Glycine max)’. He elaborated on soil testing, planting methods, sowing, seed rate, spacing, treatment, nutrient, water, weed, fertilizers and pests and diseases management, intercropping with other crops like maize, informed a press release.  

Further, he illustrated on the application methods of agricultural lime (Calcium carbonate) in fields. The primary reason to apply agricultural lime, he said, is to correct the high levels of acidity in the soil. In livestock farming, hydrated lime can be used as a disinfectant measure, producing a dry and alkaline environment in which bacteria do not readily multiply, it was stated. In horticultural farming, it can be used as an insect repellent, without causing harm to the pest or plant.  

Tonikali Achumi, DPD-ATMA Dimapur highlighted the statistics and data of soyabean productions in Nagaland. Meanwhile, Kahoto Zhimomi, a progressive farmer shared his experiences regarding eri and muga rearing, som and kessuru plantations and his coordination with ATMA.  

Janet Chishi, DPD, ATMA motivated farmers to acquire knowledge through various trainings and practice them as well as disseminate such knowledge to other farmers from village to block level. Soyabean seeds (JS 93-05 and JS 95-60 varieties) and lime bags were distributed to the 35 farmers and SHG members present.
