Kohima, July 8 (MExN): Rice seedlings were transplanted both in line sowing and System of Rice Intensification (SRI) methods in the second last week of June 2021. The methods are undertaken and implemented by SDAO Chiephobozou establishment under National Food Security Mission (NFSM) in both Chiephobozou and Botsa block.

According to a press release from the press release SDAO Chiephobozou, in the line sowing and SRI methods, rice seedlings of 8-12 days old are used which are raised on banana pseudo stems. The seedlings are then transplanted singly per hill in the main field. The varieties used are Hybrid rice and Mehourü (local). These systems use less input in terms of seed, water and also easy for pests, diseases and weeds management, the release said.

Besides, it saves time in raising rice nursery as it takes only 1-2 weeks as compared to traditional (conventional) method which usually takes two months for transplanting in the field. It also prevents the nursery from drought related problems as the nursery is raised under intensive supervision. Research suggests that the yield of rice could be enhanced by adopting SRI method of cultivation, the SDAO Chiephobozou added.
