Dimapur, October 6 (MExN): With the objective of making environmental studies easy through ‘fun and activity-based learning,’ ‘Living with the Rivers’ competition was organised recently at DMI St Joseph Global School.

A part of the school’s Intra School Competition, the event was orgnised by SK Deka, Executive Engineer, Guwahati, Assam, in collaboration with DMI St Joseph Global School and sponsored by Brahmaputra Board, a press release from the school informed.

Around 100 students from all senior classes participated and showed their presentation on water conservation theme, it said.

To make the students understand the importance of environment conservation, Brahmaputra Board and the school specifically chosen Class IX and X students as they are the immediate generation who are going to take up the responsibility of the ecosystem, it added.

Even after the introduction of Environmental Studies (EVS) as a compulsory subject in all schools following a Supreme Court ruling, the subject being a graded one is often taken lightly by most students, the release further noted.

The competition not only served as a medium to create awareness among students and teachers about their local environment and the importance of water but also to encourage responsible usages, it said.

Another objective was to highlight that water conservation is not a job that is reserved for scientists, hydrologists, foresters, wildlife managers, city planners, and farmers, but everybody’s responsibilities, it added.

Among others,  Rajiv Yadav, IAS(R), Chairman, Brahmaputra Board; Dr Bipul Talukdar, Professor of Civil Engineering Department, Assam Engineering College; Hotovi Ayemi, Chief Engineer of Water Resources Department, Kohima; and the organiser of the competition Er  SK Deka, attended the event.
