Chümoukedima, March 25 (MExN): St Joseph University (SJU) inaugurated its Varsity Sports Week 2026 on March 25 at the SJU Ground under the theme “Ignite the Athlete Within”, with enthusiastic participation from students, faculty members and invited guests.
The inaugural programme began with the unfurling of the national flag by the special guest, Colonel Rajarshi Das, Deputy Commander, 6 Sector, Assam Rifles, followed by the hoisting of the university flag by Vice-Chancellor Dr D Gnanadurai, setting a patriotic tone for the event.
The programme commenced with an invocation by Rev Fr L Anish, Public Relations Officer (PRO), SJU. It was chaired by Ms K Livikali Yeptho, Assistant Professor, Department of Management, while the SJU anthem was presented by the Music Club.
President of the Students’ Council, Gobind Pradhan, delivered the welcome address, and Dean of Student Affairs, Prof Charles Mhonthung Ezung, extended greetings, encouraging students to uphold unity and sportsmanship.
A special appearance by Wekupe Therie added vibrancy to the event. Appreciation certificates and mementos were presented by Dr Thiyagarajan, Controller of Examinations, SJU, in recognition of contributions to the event.
In his address, Colonel Rajarshi Das emphasised the importance of holistic development beyond academics. He said society requires not only academic achievers but also sportsmen, thinkers, listeners and leaders who can contribute meaningfully to nation-building. He encouraged students to see themselves as future nation-builders and stressed that responsible and active citizenship is key to nation-building.
Highlighting the value of education, he urged students to use it as a tool to reduce inequality and serve society with integrity and purpose. He remarked that a great nation is built not only in Parliament but also in classrooms, farms, laboratories, startups and sports fields. He further motivated students by stating that life is a journey of growth where resilience and perseverance turn challenges into opportunities.
The oath-taking ceremony was administered by Mukom Khiamniungan, Games and Sports Secretary, affirming the spirit of fair play. This was followed by the ceremonial lighting of the torch, symbolising unity and marking the official commencement of the sports week.
The special guest then formally declared the Varsity Sports Week 2026 open.
The programme concluded with a benediction by Rev Fr Martin Jacques, Assistant Campus Manager, SJU. An exhibition match between the Students’ Council and SJU Faculty (men) followed, setting an energetic tone for the competitions ahead.
The Varsity Sports Week will continue till March 27, featuring various sporting events aimed at fostering teamwork, discipline, resilience and sportsmanship among students.
