Dimapur, January 17 (MExN): The Nagaland BJP today issued a statement listing out a number of arguments why BJP is not communal, or anti-Christian party. The party also reiterated its opposition to the President’s Rule, restoration of the DAN government and reviving the suspended Tenth Nagaland Legislative Assembly.
The statement, issued by senior vice president Ntsemo N Ngullie, mentioned of a “fear psychosis” in the minds of the people that if the BJP comes to power, “the Nagas will be converted to Hinduism.” This is a propaganda and political gimmick, the party maintained. In fact the party ‘never interferes with the rights and beliefs of individuals’ by virtue that one of the BJP’s pillars is “positive secularism…” unlike the Congress’ which, the statement maintained, is “artificial and superficial secularism.” The BJP listed out the anti-conversion bill passed during the Congress regime as well as the recent anti-Christian upheaval in Orissa.
“If the BJP is against the Christians then how during the NDA coalition, Shri. George Fernandes a strong Christian devotee, was made the chairman of NDA and has become the defense minister of India” the BJP challenged adding that Dr PC Alexander’s proposed presidentship was rejected by the Congress.
Likewise, the BJP listed out a number of prominent Christian personalities whose proposed elevation to various important positions was rejected by the Congress.
Coming to Nagaland, the BJP contented that if the party is anti-Christian, how former prime minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee “came to Nagaland personally” and “gave an economic package of Rs. 1053 crore to the Naga Christians and granting of Rs 365 crore for clearing our liabilities.”
Further, contenting that BJP is not anti-Christian, the state BJP mentioned its leaders Dr. TM Lotha, Imtilemba and MC Konyak who, the party said, are “very devoted Christians” and are “living and exemplary life by sincerely serving the people of Nagaland.”
