DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 29 (MExN): The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC), Ghaziabad, an autonomous institution under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on November 28 signed three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Nagaland Medical Council, the Nagaland State Drugs Control Administration (NSDCA) and the Nagaland State Pharmacy Council (NSPC).

The MoUs were signed during a one-day training programme on “Pharmacovigilance and Materiovigilance” jointly organised by the IPC and the Nagaland State Drugs Control Administration, Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Nagaland, in Dimapur.

The agreements were signed by Dr V. Kalaiselvan, Secretary-cum-Scientific Director, IPC, with Dr Kevilhulie Meyase, Registrar, Nagaland Medical Council; Imlilila, Assistant Drugs Controller, NSDCA; and Khele Thorie, Registrar, Nagaland State Pharmacy Council.

In a press statement, Ethungbemo Ezung, Assistant Drugs Controller, Drugs Control Administration, Department of Health & Family Welfare said the programme aimed to strengthen collaborative efforts in promoting public health by facilitating the use of Indian Pharmacopoeia Reference Substances (IPRS) and impurity standards in drug-testing laboratories under NSDCA, promoting the safe and rational use of medicines through the National Formulary of India (NFI), and enhancing pharmacovigilance and materiovigilance activities across Nagaland.

It also seeks to advance patient-safety initiatives, promote adverse-event reporting for medicines and medical devices, build capacity among healthcare stakeholders, and support the establishment of Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring Centres (AMCs) and Medical Device Monitoring Centres (MDMCs).

The MoU with the Nagaland Medical Council marks the first collaboration of its kind between the IPC and any State Medical Council in India to promote pharmacovigilance and materiovigilance up to the level of Primary Health Centres (PHCs). The MoU with NSDCA is IPC’s second with a State Drugs Control Department—after the Uttar Pradesh Food and Drug Administration—and the first in the North-Eastern region. The MoU with the Nagaland State Pharmacy Council makes it the fourth State Pharmacy Council in the country to partner with IPC on the safe and rational use of medicines.
