Stop DMC tax on livestock: ACAUT

DIMAPUR, JUNE 21 (MExN): The Action Committee against Unabated Taxation has in a letter to the Chief Executive Officer of the Dimapur Municipal Council demanded that collection of taxes on livestock be immediately stopped. It further stated that the Doctor at the DMC Veterinary public cell be removed from post. The letter appended by the Convener of the ACAUT, Ntsemo Ngullie and its Secretary, Solomon L Awomi informed that the DMC Veterinary public health cell “has been collecting taxes worth Rs 40 per pig and cow, Rs 50 per goat, Rs 25 per chicken and Rs 25 per stall on fish in the evening (twice a day) without examination/post mortem by a doctor to see whether it is consumable or not.” The letter said that in the absence of a laboratory for testing the meat, the issuing of challans declaring the meat to be fit for human consumption without a doctor’s examination is “not only illegal but immoral.” It further added that the tax collection under the given circumstances escalates the problem of high taxation which leads to price inflation.

Hokivi Chishi, President of the DCCI, who is also a member of the fact finding committee informed of many instances where, “seven individuals, who act as Veterinary Field Officers go around various markets and collect taxes.” Chishi has urged the business committee to refrain from paying tax to the veterinary public cell until the issue is resolved. He also reiterated that there is a lack of proper facilities and qualified officials to ascertain, as to whether the meat sold in the markets is hygienic.

Syndicate/dealership system has
monopolized poultry rates: DNSU

In a separate press statement, the Dimapur Naga Students Union has said that “with the introduction of Syndicate/dealership system in poultry business by outsiders and illegal immigrants,” many Naga poultry farmers have been victimized.

A press note by the President of the DNSU, K Mhachio Lotha and its Speaker, Petevito Nakhro informed that this has monopolized the poultry rates. The note said that the monopolization process is evident from the fact that “within a short span of time, Broiler price was enhanced from Rs.130/- (DMC) price to Rs.180-200/- by those Syndicates.”

In view of this, the DNSU had been entrusted by the Action Committee against Unabated Taxation (ACAUT) under the aegis of Naga Council to oversee the ban implemented on all kinds of Poultry (Local/Farm) sale in Dimapur, till the Fact Finding Committee of ACAUT comes out with the rates compared to other neighboring towns of Dimapur. The DNSU has appealed for all citizens to bear with the inconveniences and further warned all vendors/outlets to immediately stop selling poultry, with effect from this publication.
