Newmai News Network Aizawl | December 19 Traffic rules would be enforced in stricter form in the Mizoram capital as well as in all district headquarters before and during Christmas and New Year celebrations as part of measure to ensure road safety, C Lalthanmawia, Superintendent of Police, Traffic, Aizawl district said. Earlier this month, the government had launched ‘no tolerance drive’ to ensure road safety. During the no tolerance drive, traffic police would conduct mass checking on violation of traffic rules especially drunken driving, smoking and using mobile phones while driving and incomplete documents. The meeting of Co-ordination Committee on Traffic Management under the leadership of Home Minister R. Lalzirliana on Monday agreed that ‘No vehicle zone’ would be clamped in busy places of Aizawl in view of Christmas and New Year celebration. The meeting decided that the number of vehicles should be fixed for plying on certain roads and street vendors would be kept at the disposal of Aizawl Municipal Corporation. No vehicle zone would be observed in the state capital on December 22, 23 and 30. The meeting of Co-ordination Committee on Traffic Management also decided that competition for best street decoration would be conducted for each locality under UD &PA department sponsorship so that all the streets look attractive during the festive season. The first prize shall carry Rs. 1 lakh, second prize Rs. 70,000 and the third prize will carry Rs 50,000. The meeting also deliberated about the initiatives that have been taken as regard reduction of traffic log jam in the capital. It was highlighted in the meeting that 54 out of 83 localities in Aizawl have submitted census report of number of vehicles and garages in their respective localities. The meeting also resolved that massive raid and checking against ‘no garage’ would be conducted on a war footing.
