‘Strong statistical system a performance indicator of economy’

Kohima, May 28 (MExN): Parliamentary Secretary for economics & statistics and information & public relations, R Tohanba today inaugurated the two-day workshop on data collection for improvement of statistical system with special emphasis on State Domestic Product for strengthening state plan for human development at the directorate of Economics & Statistics, Nagaland.

Addressing the gathering, Tohanba said, “It is my firm belief and conviction that greater thrust and focus on sound statistical system has become indispensable in generating a reliable statistical data adding that strong statistical system is fundamental for formulation of economic policies which provides an indicator on the performance of the economy.” He added that forming a basis for the adoption of the current decisions and at the same time underlining the projections for future developments is basically required to facilitate comparative analyses on the economies of the state with the rest of the states in India and at the same time could reveal the economy position of the state at the national level.

Stressing on the present administrative statistics affairs of the state, the Parliamentary Secretary stated that modern statistical techniques are making way into diversified areas, thereby engaging attention of private sector entities. Stating that the statistical indicator facilitates comparative analysis on the economy of the state with other states in the country, he said that the directorate of Economics & Statistics has been declared as the nodal agency for all statistical activities in the state for enforcement and development of the existing statistical system in the state to improve the quality of data which has become the primary concern in the economic planning and development process of our state.

Expressing happiness over the department’s effort in bringing out estimated figures of the State Domestic Product (SDP) annually in collaboration with the Central Statistical Organization (CSO), he further mentioned the latest data on SDP as per the report of 2005-06, which shows Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) as Rs.5,66,689 lakhs at current price and Rs.4,87,997 lakhs at constant price. The Net State Domestic Product (NSDP) shows as Rs.5,25,538 lakhs at current price and Rs.4,56,608 lakhs at constant price. Mention may be made that the per capita income at the current piece is Rs.2,10,83 – arrived at from the NSDP) an overall increase of 52.57% over the previous years with base year 1999-2000.

The keynote address was pronounced by Dr. Savita Sharma, BDZ, NAD, CSO. Resource persons for the technical session included Dr. Savita Sharma and Dr. Tapas Ghosal, Dy. Director DEAS, West Bengal. The function was chaired by Alemtemshi Jamir, IAS, ACS and Development Commissioner, Nagaland, keynote address delivered by resource person Dr. Sharma, and words of gratitude offered by L Daniel Longchar, IAS, Secretary for economics & statistics, Nagaland.
