Anti- Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) shutdown-call given by AMSU in solidarity to NESO’s Northeast-wide strike was near total in Manipur, especially in Imphal on Tuesday.

All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) gave a 15-hour total shutdown in the state in solidarity to an 11-hour total shutdown in the entire Northeast region of the country given by North East Students’ Organisation (NESO).

The total shutdown commenced from 3 am and ended peacefully with good response from the people at 6 pm.

The strike evoked a good response from the people as they came out on the roads at various places across the state, particularly in valley districts and blocked the road in support of the anti-CAB protest.

Except sporadic incidents of police dispersing the protestors from blocking the roads, no major untoward incident related with the total shutdown was reported during the strike.

Almost all shops and other business establishments remained down their shutters.

Fuel outlets were not opened for the day and streets wore nearly a deserted look with only few vehicles plying on the roads.

Except for few private vehicles, almost all the commercial vehicles including long and short distance passenger services stayed off the roads on the day.

Student leaders taking part in imposing the shutdown alleged that CAB is a mechanism of the Centre to convert the NE region into dumping ground of illegal migrants.

"CAB is a policy of the government of India to eliminate the indigenous peoples of the region by granting citizenship to the illegal migrants", they alleged.
