Students grieve onset of tribal killings

Dimapur, Dec 14 (MExN): Condemning the December 1 assault of a lecturer and a medical employee by unidentified armed miscreants in Kohima, Peren Students Union appeals against sowing the divisive seeds of misunderstanding and misinformation targeting a particular community. Taking the instance of Athibung – one of the most volatile factional feud hotbeds in Nagaland – Peren Students Union reminds that the people of the said sub-division are now “living in nightmare” and on this, protection of human rights, lives and properties of innocents be respected.

“The PSU would like to appeal to the Nagas not to sow seed of misunderstanding and misinformation by targeting a particular community on suspicion or reasons best known to the culprits” the union through its President Rangro Herie appealed in a release.

The union strongly held that instances such as the December 1 assault of it members are serious cases of intimidation towards innocent public ‘particularly the Zeliangrong community’. The students called against such acts which are sending a ‘wave of hopelessness, tribalism, and nepotism and fear psychosis in the minds of the people’.

The union also took strong exception that “some particular community” are taking shelter in and around Kohima under the name of the Zeliangrong community.

The PSU has demanded that this misuse of the community’s name be stopped immediately so that common interest, integrity and fraternity are promoted in the Naga society. “Let us stop targeting, kidnapping, assaulting or killing an innocent person without any reasons and facts on the pretext that a particular person is speaking a particular tongue or dressing in particular community dress” the union stated.

The PSU further citied the instance of Athibung under Peren district where the people are now “living in nightmare” because of the incessant clashing between the two NSCN factions. “”Public of Athibung are living in nightmare because of the constant raids and feuds between the two NSCN groups. The PSU would like to declare to the world once for all that like any other citizens, the public of Peen are peace-loving people” PSU reminded. The students’ organization has asked both the warring NSCNs to remain confined to their respective designated camps and “help” create festive mood and refrains from their attacks and counter-attacks.
