SUL observes ‘Mongmong festival’

Longleng, September 5 (MExN): The Sangtam Union, Longleng (SUL) celebrated ‘Mongmong festival’ on September 5 at the resident of Deputy Commissioner Longleng, John Tsulise Sangtam.
A DPRO report stated that Sangtam, in his welcome address conveyed his Mongmong festival greetings. He also welcomed the gathering invitees and in-laws and at the same time thanked them for extending cooperation and support to the Sangtam community of Longleng in various ways.
Thsingvi T Sangtam, Assistant Professor, Yingli College spoke on the significance of the festival. He spoke on the theory of the origin of Sangtam community and various traditional games and sports played by both men and women during these six days celebration and also other festivals observed by the Sangtams. Thsingvi asserted that the Mongmong festival is celebrated before the harvest to have bountiful harvest in the new fields. He also said that announcement of the festival by the priest during the night is for separation of spirit of dead from the living and the festival is a symbol of ending hard work and starting new harvest. “On this day the Sangtam community thanked their God of houses and three cooking stones for making their live worthy and fruitful,” he added.
Akhaba, General Manager, DIC, Longleng also spoke and exhorted the people. Special number was presented by the in-laws, invocation was proposed by Lilongla and the programme concluded with a mass prayer. The programme was chaired by Robi Sangtam, EAC, Longleng.
