Sumi apex bodies demand action against rape accused

DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 20 (MExN): Several Sumi apex bodies have submitted a representation to the Zunheboto Deputy Commissioner demanding action against the accused in the rape and murder of a woman who was found dead near Tsutha River in Zunheboto district.

In a joint memorandum to the Zunheboto DC, the Sumi Hoho, Sumi Kukami Hoho, SKK and the STH Apex demanded that the accused be given the death penalty and cautioned that “if the authorities fail to take appropriate action against the accused, the organizations would be compelled to take our own course of action as per Sumi customary law.” It further demanded that the district administration place the case to the fast track court.

The memorandum meanwhile resolved that the accused “and his entire family has to leave the Sumi territory within 72 hours.” “If any family of the accused is found within Sumi land, we shall not be held responsible for any eventualities,” it added.

It further resolved that “henceforth, any such case of rape or murder happening within Sumi territory shall be dealt solely by the Sumi apex organizations as per customary law.”

These resolutions were adopted during a public rally held at center point, Zunheboto on September 20.
