Summer Camp: Promoting peace through nature

Kohima, July 10 (MExN): Peace Channel, Kohima Chapter organised a two-day Summer Camp for Peace Club members in collaboration with Nehru Yuva Kendra Kohima on June 28 and 29 with the theme ‘Promoting Peace through Nature’.   Resource person Peter Yhome asserted the need to protect the environment, which he said is “our rights and responsibility”. Speaking on the theme, he lamented that destroying the environment, for many, has been the tradition, and is bound to happen for livelihood. “As a result there is less peaceful co-existence with nature. The components of nature are not bought, it is a free gift to us, and hence the need of the hour is to promote peace through the different component of nature,” he stated, according to a press release.

He further challenged the participants saying nature does not need people, people need nature. Therefore, Peace Club members should pledge to save the mother earth by implementing a rights-based approach to conservation and prevent conflict, he said.

John Makhabo, State Coordinator NYK explained to the Peace Clubs members the various schemes under Central ministries and Govt. of Nagaland for rural development. He said that youths’ active participation is needed in environmental protection, climate change, health and personal hygiene, sanitation and cleanliness, drug and alcohol free village, continuing education of school drop-outs, immunization, blood donation, AIDS and Hepatitis B awareness, women empowerment, skill development and entrepreneurship, etc. He also explained the various activities and programmes carried out by NYK like Neighbourhood Youth Parliament Programme. He encouraged the members to disseminate the same information to the parents so that they will be aware of various welfare programmes and schemes which have been implemented by the Government.

The two-day event also saw various activities such as Group Work, Talent Show, Peace Celebration. Competitions were held to build and nurture the hidden talent of the Peace Club members, the release added. At least 60 Peace Club members from 9 different schools of Kohima and Peren attended the Summer Camp.
