IN THE light of the Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung issuing an order following a meeting at his office on May 28 regarding the menace of illegal immigrants in the district, the president of AKM Aodangnok today clarified that the AKM’s “Survival 2007” campaign is still in effect and that they will not compromise until the last illegal migrant is identified and prosecuted as per provisions of the law.
The vice-president of AKM Imtisusu also told this correspondent that the AKM - safeguarding the culture, custom and economy of the indigenous people of Mokokchung - does not in any way amount to “taking law in our own hands”. “In fact, we are only exercising our constitutional right”, he added. The AKM also appreciated the district administration for their concern with regard to the issue and lauded the initiative the administration is taking to curb this menace lately. However, the AKM made it very clear that although it is always ready to co-operate with the administration, it will nonetheless exercise its rights and duties to safeguard interests that fall within its purview.
An executive member of the AKM, Repjen Molier, expressed dismay over the fact that the staff personnel of the ILP section of the district administration were not able to provide information sought with regard to the total number of ILPs issued prior to year 2000 and the total number of ILPs renewed in the last three months.
It may be mentioned that though the concern competent authorities granted permission to the press media, the staff were unable to produce the necessary information sought in this regard. The press was requested to “wait till next week” for the information.
Molier also doubted the integrity of the staff of the ILP section and hinted that it might be brought to the scanner of the AKM. The apex students’ body also sounded alarm that the illegal immigrants driven out of Mokokchung might sneak into the neighbouring districts and disclosed that AKM will officially inform its counterparts in the neighbouring districts about the same.
