S&WC surveys landslide affected area at Viswema vill

Kohima, July 29 (MExN): An official team led by Commissioner & Secretary, Soil & Water Conservation, Vikeyie Kenya accompanied by Project Director, Deputy Director and Soil Survey Officer of the department visited Viswema village, Kohima district on July 28 to assess infrastructural and property damage caused by landslide.  

It was observed that “the massive landslide triggered by incessant rain has damaged atleast 7 houses in the village including paddy fields, the value of which would account to crores of rupees,” it was mentioned in a release by Hetoho Y Swu, Deputy Director, S&WC.   

Furthermore, road- a major infrastructure has been completely damaged thereby causing undue hardship to the commuters, both village dwelling and those travelling towards Zuketsa and vice-versa, it added.  

The release further apprised that “the damage is of alarming magnitude and the concerned department/agency need to address the problem on priority basis, otherwise the landslide may escalate further causing more damage and hardship.”  

The landslide stretches from about fifty meters below the National Highway 2 and extending into forested areas, where large gaps/fissures have developed as wide as 4 feet and the land surface has been greatly disfigured thereby posing grave danger not only for the inhabitants but also for normal movement of people for daily activities.  

“A report to this effect is being submitted to the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority for further necessary action,” it also informed.  

Earlier, the MLA of the area and Advisor,Youth Resources & Sports, Er. Zale Neikha who was also on a visit to the affected area, instructed the officials to assess the damage and pursue the matter with the higher authority in earnest.
