
Dimapur, Nov 14 (MExN): The dedication of District Project Office, Department of Land Resources, as well as a one-day farmers training programme on bee-keeping and crops grown under IWDP was held in Longleng with Wepretso Mero, Deputy Commissioner of Longleng, as the chief guest on November 10.
The Deputy Commissioner of Longleng in his speech stressed on the potential of agriculture and allied sectors in the area. Mero stated that unlike other districts of Nagaland, Longleng is yet to be explored and said that if the natural resources are properly managed and used, it can uplift the economy of the local farmers. Mero called upon the farmers to take advantage of the rich fertile soil and its suitability for cultivation of numerous agricultural crops along with other enterprises. He also advised them to take advantage of the demand of honey, cardamom and other agricultural products in the market and asked them to export these produce for profits.
Metpong, President of Phom Peoples Council and Leisha, Chairman of Longleng Town Council in their exhortations agreed that the Government ‘from the past till date’ is playing a pivotal role in the development of the area particularly in agriculture. They advised the farmers to adopt the techniques taught in the training for more productivity in their agricultural efforts, which, the leaders stated, will help in creating more employment opportunities for the people, making them more self-reliant. They also asked the participants to “avoid laziness and ignorance for creating more scope for the future generations.”
In the training session, a topic on bee-keeping was delivered by Menuosietuo Tseikha, DPO In-charge Longleng, while Ruokuosietuo WDT shared on the dynamics of production techniques of Cardamom. Also, Rosang WDT shared on nursery nurturing while the basics of management of orange diseases were shared by Lireni WDT.
Earlier in the programme, the welcome and keyword address was delivered by DPO in charge, Longleng. The DPO in-charge in his address revised the meaning of training, apprising the farmers that its purpose is “to get trained” and “become masters to implement the things in a practical way.” The DPO also appreciated the farmers and assured to cooperate in delivering the projects.
The Pastor of Longleng Town Baptist Church, Beau, said the dedication for the new office of the DPO. Altogether 258 farmers from 30 villages actively participated in the training programme.
The programme concluded with a distribution of bee crates (50 each) to two villages - Orangkong and Yaongyimchen while a Cardamom drier was given to Yongam Village.
