TDLSA and MDLSA hold consultation with Juvenile Justice Stakeholders

Tuensang/Mon, September 1 (MExN): The Tuensang District Legal Services Authority (TDLSA) and Mon District Legal Services Authority (MDLSA) organized consultation meeting with stakeholders of Juvenile Justice (JJ) in their respective jurisdictions on August 30. Mayang Lima, Principal District and Sessions Judge, Tuensang and Chairman TDLSA, delivering keynote address at the programme held at Durbar Hall, DEF Tuensang gave brief interpretation on Juvenile Justice Act. Sharing activities of Special Juvenile Police Unit (SJPU), Neizhalie, OC Longkhim and SJPU member stressed on the need to equip SJPU through workshops.

Meanwhile, N. Kano, Principal Magistrate of Juvenile Justice Board and Secretary TDLSA apprised the stakeholders of the proper functioning system and called for team work in matters relating to child. JJB member James also shared that observation home is the best place for proceeding to give child friendly services. Khaikho, District Child Protection Officer, in his report stated their role is in supervision, implementation and creating awareness with cluster of villages and target one school once in a month. He reported that Village Level Child Welfare Committee has been formed in 50 to 60 villages under Tuensang. DCPO, he added, also looks into sponsorship and foster care of a child in need of care and protection. Shilu Lemba, Probation Officer of observation home reported that at present they have two inmates.

Meanwhile, Pukho Meyo, Para Legal Volunteer of Thonoknyu LAC shared his experience and challenges in dealing with juvenile matters in remote areas, where there are no SJPU, transport and homes. Deliberation was held for steps to be taken as a follow up in providing justice by the stakeholders.

In Mon, the meeting was held at front office of MDLSA. The MDLSA team highlighted the powers and functions of stakeholders. Representatives of Child Welfare Committee (CWC), District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), and Special Juvenile Police Unit (SJPU) were present at the meeting.
