THE SILENT EPIDEMIC: Non-Communicable Disease Special Drive in Nagaland launched

Kohima, February 20 (MExN): The Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) Special Drive was launched by Mission Director of National Health Mission Nagaland through a VC with all the District officials of the Department of Health and Family Welfare on February 20. 

The State NCD Cell (NPCDCS), Directorate of Health and Family Welfare, Nagaland in a press release stated that during the 40 days campaign (February 20 to March 31), all the health units screening will be conducted. The activity will focus on screening of 30 plus age group for two common NCDs, namely Diabetes and Hypertension and ensure 100% coverage of the eligible population of 30 plus. 

During the launching of the special drive, the Mission Director stated that NCDs has emerged as a silent epidemic affecting people at an early age for both the genders irrespective of socio-economic status or geographical region in the country as well as in the state of Nagaland. 

Under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of NCD, the 30 plus population for Diabetes, Hypertension, Oral Cancer, Breast Cancer, Cervical Cancer and Non Alcoholic Liver disease and host of other NCDs. It is found that a significant number of individuals remain undiagnosed and untreated. The objective of the launching of Special NCD Drive hopes to ensure that the screening for NCD reaches every corner of Nagaland. 

The dedication, commitment and leadership will play a vital role towards the success of the campaign where active participation of CMOs, MSs, CHOs, MOs and ASHAs is needed as they are the cornerstone of healthcare delivery system in the district.

The promotion and awareness of the NCD especially in rural and remote areas of the state where access to healthcare is limited was emphasised during the launching of the special drive. It is also emphasised that collaboration with local leaders, civil societies and community groups would lead to wide spread participation of the community by providing the citizens with knowledge, empowerment and resources for a healthy life and ultimately save lives from the silent epidemic affecting the community.
