Thousand venerate St John Bosco’s relic

Kohima | May 5 : Thousand of people from all walks of life gathered at the state capital to welcome and to have a glance of Saint John Bosco’s relic that was ferried in a casket from Cathedral Church passing through the main town to Kohima Village, Kohima.
As the saint’s relic arrived at Don Bosco Higher secondary school and Christ king higher secondary school, students in traditional attires and school uniform shouted slogan “Long Live Don Bosco” and “We love you Don Bosco”. The casket, containing the skeleton of the right hand of Don Bosco, placed inside the chest of his statue, arrived at the Kohima Little Flower Higher Secondary School complex last evening amidst colorful display of fireworks, cheers and applause by children and teachers. The casket was brought in to the alter in the middle of the school ground by traditionally clad believers and escorted by the NCC, guides, and a marching Don Bosco pipe band. Church leaders and Salesians also accompanied the march.
A host of Salesian Priests, students, parents, alumnus & well wishers enthusiastically received the relic where a reception programme was held at DBS ground and Salesian priests highlighted the significance of the relic and also dwelt on the life and contributions made by St John Bosco.
MLA Dr. Nicky Kire, an Alumnus, addressing the mammoth gathering, recalled his days as a student of Don Bosco School, Shillong from 1962 to 1969. He extolled the contribution of Salesians of Don Bosco in the field of education and inspiring individuals, stating that he was not belittling the contributions of other schools, adding that most of the top officials in the helm of affairs in the state were either products of Don Bosco School or the Sainik Schools. Later the denizens, parents and students paid their homage and also sought blessing from the St. John Bosco’s relic in the casket. Later, St. John Bosco’s relic arrived at Christ King Church, Kohima, where a welcome ceremony took place in the church followed by veneration of the Relics and paying of homage. St. John Bosco’s relic would halt at Christ King Church Kohima for the night and then leave for Zubza and Wokha tomorrow.
It may be mentioned that, in preparation for the celebration of the Bi-centenary of the birth of Saint John Bosco in 2015. The pilgrimage began in 2009 and the casket would be taken across 130 countries at different Salesian institutions and also in the Northeast during its nearly two-month-long tour in the region. The Salesian Family, and the Church as a whole, will celebrate the 200th Anniversary of Don Bosco’s birth in 2015.
