A large number of people took out a rally on Tuesday under the aegis of Darlawn District Demand Committee at Darlawn town, about 114 km northeast of Aizawl, demanding the creation of Darlawn as a full-fledged district.
Darlawn is located in Aizawl district in the northeastern part of the state.
About 3000 people took part in the public rally, which was also joined by residents from neighbouring villages. All vehicles stayed off the road during the rally.
The protesters who took part in the rally shouted slogans demanding the creation of new district "for development of the area" and expressed their dislike for attachment with other district.
According to Darlawn District Demand Committee secretary Lalhmangaizual, there are 41 villages within the designated Darlawn district demand area in northeastern Mizoram.
“We do not want to be attached with other district, but new district with separate administrative setup for development of our area,” he said.
During the protest rally, the protesters also passed resolutions demanding that the creation of new district for Darlawn is administratively and politically crucial as the area lags behind other districts in terms of development. They said that better security arrangement is required in Darlawn district demand area as it is located near the inter-state boundary between Mizoram, Manipur and Assam.
“We demand the creation of new administrative setup for Darlawn district to enable the people live peacefully and prevent external threat,” the resolution, which was submitted to the state government through Darlawn Block Divisional Officer, H Zonunmawia said.
The protesters also asked the state government to implement all their demands before the election code of conduct is in place.
The demand for creation of Darlawn district began in 1988, according to leaders of district demand committee.
The proposed Darlawn district comprises of 41 villages, 40,000 people and over 8,000 houses in three assembly constituencies – Tuival, Chalfilh and Serlui in Aizawl district. It covers 1500 sq.km area.
During the MNF regime in 2008, the state government also announced the creation of Saitual district along with two more districts – Hnathial and Khawzawl. However, the new districts have not been made functional till date under the Congress led State government.
