'A threat to the spirit of Secularism'

CBCC on Good Governance day

Dimapur, March 24 (MExN): The Chakhesang Baptist Church Council (CBCC) today asserted that the observance of Good Governance Day (GGD) on Christmas Day “is a deliberate attempt on the part of the Central Government to suppress the religious rights of the Christian minorities in India.”

Making its “position clear” on the issue, the CBCC in a press statement issued by its Executive Secretary Rev. Dr. Vezopa Tetseo and Chairman Pastors’ Fellowship CBCC Rev. Dr. NuvuchoDzüdo, said that the declaration of GGD on Christmas “is therefore a threat to the spirit of Secularism and a total disregard, neglect, discrimination and denial of our Fundamental Right to religious practices.”

“Christmas is the greatest festival of Christians not only in India but all over the world... any attempt to dilute the importance of the day will go down in the history as a discriminatory move against the religious minority,” it added.

Besides adopting resolution against the same, the Chakhesang Baptist Pastors’ Fellowship held at Chizami Baptist Church from March 21-23 also noted with “much concerns” that imposition of Uniform Civil Code and celebrating GGD on Christmas were nothing “but a display of political arrogance and religious intolerance of the central leadership of the day.”

In this connection, the CBCC called upon all Christians to “defy the imposition of Good Governance day on Christmas Day” and also appealed the concerned authority to “repeal the Central Government’s decision.”

It also called upon all believers to “pray for God’s intervention for necessary repealing and rectification of the Government’s decision” in the greater interest of peace and harmony of the nation.
