KOHIMA, JANUARY 15 (MExN): The Kohima District Planning and Development Board (DPDB) today decided to recommend a proposal on taxi parking within Kohima Town as submitted by the Association of Kohima Municipal Wards Panchayats.

This was decided in the State capital’s first DPDB meeting for the year held under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner, Kohima and Vice Chairman of the DPDB, Gregory Thejawelie, NCS, at the DPDB's conference hall, Kohima on January 15.

A DIPR report said the Chairman informed the members that the association had submitted the proposal based on traffic congestion created by multiple taxi parkings in urban area.

The association had pointed out that besides the government designated taxis parking areas; the taxis were still found parking at Old BOC area and near the Assistant Director of Supplies cum godown office respectively, adding multiple problems to the acute traffic congestion to those areas. Therefore, the association had proposed for immediate shifting of taxis to its designated parking stations as per the government standing order.

In this regard, the board deliberated on the concerned issues and noting the requirement of certain measures should be taken to avoid the traffic congestion in the town, decided to recommend the matter to the government for necessary action.

The board also decided to suggest for implementation of parking provision in upcoming buildings on the road sides within the urban areas.

This decision as taken in view of 70% of vehicle owners utilizing public roads as personal parking space at nights, “which creates huge inconveniences and traffic problem everywhere, especially in wards and colony roads.”
