Touch Life Centre to function as VTP

DIMAPUR, MAY 20 (MExN): Touch Life Centre – established in 2009 is a non-profit organization. Based in Chumukedima, Dimapur, the objective of the NGO is to empower women and the youth by providing vocational training or giving them the skills to earn a livelihood. At present, the centre is imparting training on tailoring and embroidery.
It was selected by the department of Employment & Craftsman Training as a Vocational Training Provider (VTP) under ‘Skill Development Initiative Programme’ funded by the Directorate General of Employment & Craftsman Training, Union Ministry of Labour. Additional Director of the department Y. Vandanshan Lotha inaugurated it on Friday, May 20.
At the inaugural today, Lotha disclosed that this is the first time in Nagaland that a privately-run centre has been selected to impart vocational training. He added that all the districts will be encouraged to come up with such centres (VTPs), besides encouraging training on other trades as well. Unlike other government-run vocational training centres, the trainees will be charged nominal fees to avail training. On the logic behind the charging of fees, Lotha quipped: “It will make them (trainees) more responsible” thus better results.
To avail certificates at the end of the course, the trainees will have to clear exams as is the norm. Availing the certificates, however, will depend on the discretion of an independent assessment committee nominated by the government or the department. At present the Confederation of Indian Industry asses the progress of trainees at government-run Industrial Training Institutes and other vocational training centres.
