Independent defeats NPF candidate
DIMAPUR, MARCH 26 (MExN): Independent candidate Toyang Chankong Chang won the Tuensang Sadar-I assembly seat by defeating the Naga People’s Front (NPF) candidate Elan Chang by a margin of 2,272 votes. In the counting held Tuesday, Toyang Chankong Chang polled 9,534 votes while Elan Chang polled 7,262 votes.
Election to Tuensang Sadar-I assembly seat had to be countermanded due to the death of Congress candidate P. Chuba Chang a day before the state went to polls on February 23. It may be mentioned the Congress party did not field a candidate but said it would support the Independent candidate. Election for this seat was held on March 23. With Toyang’s win, the number of Independent candidates in the state assembly has risen to eight in the 60-member house.
