Normal vehicular movement along Imphal-Moreh section of NH-102 was brought to grinding halt at Singjamei area in Imphal West district after hundreds of womenfolk remained seated on the road after a 'peace rally' aiming to meet the chief minister was prevented by the police and RAF on Monday.

The women remained seated on the street till the time of filing this report, insisting that they would not move from the spot unless they were allowed to meet and submit memorandums to the Governor and the chief minister.

According to the agitating women, they were carrying out the rally to submit memorandums to the Governor and the chief minister pleading with them to end the prevailing crisis in the state at the earliest.

They were, however, stopped by a team of RAF and state police along the NH-102 in the Singjamei Super Market area.

Failure on the part of the police to allow them to proceed further, the irate women with flags in their hands remained seated on the road disrupting the normal vehicular movement on the national highway till late this evening.

The protesting women questioned the reason behind the security forces not allowing them to meet the Governor and the Chief Minister when thousands of women were allowed to converge in front of the Chief Minister’s official bungalow weeks ago to stop the Chief Minister from resigning from his post.

They reiterated that the only purpose of the rally was to submit memorandums to the Governor and the Chief Minister, urging them to end the prevailing crisis in the state at the earliest.

They stressed the urgent need for the government to take concrete steps to restore peace in Manipur as soon as possible. If the crisis is allowed to escalate, the situation in the state will worsen and many more lives will be lost, they worried.

Crying that many mothers have lost their loved ones while many of them became widows, they asked what steps have been taken up by the Central and the State Governments to bring back peace and normalcy in the state.
