Training on Naga Mircha and mushroom cultivation

Mokokchung, July 8 (MExN): Two-day training on Naga Mircha and mushroom cultivation under MIDH 2016-17 was organized by the Department of Horticulture, Government of Nagaland in collaboration with the Jangpetkong Students’ Conference from July 6 to 7.  

The main resource person of the training was Senti Longchar (DK), Horticulture Officer. He gave an overview of the training’s importance to the participants. During the technical sessions, he emphasized on the importance of kitchen gardening for self sufficiency and better income generation. He pointed out that consumption of king chilli is very less in Mokokchung district, thus, the cultivation of the crop is not in commercial scale, a press release informed. He suggested that even if the consumption rate is low, they could go for commercial production of the crop to supply outside the state. Longchar also gave a presentation on various nursery raising and cultivation techniques on king chilli in jhum fields.  

On the second day, the key topic was on cultivation of oyster mushroom for rural livelihood. Longchar said that oyster mushroom cultivation is the easiest and most economical practice, which could be carried out in the rural areas for their better income and livelihood.  

The trainees saw a hands-on demonstration on oyster mushroom cultivation which was conducted by Longer Walling from State Horticulture Nursery, Dimapur.  

Longnyei, EAC Alongkima also encouraged the participants to take up various crop cultivations suitable in the area and further challenged the cultivators that distance and transportation should not be an excuse for commercialization of potential crops.  

The programme was chaired by Narola, Women co-ordinator, JSC. The training concluded with giving away of certificates and distribution of spawns to the participants.
