CAN Youth and Nehru Yuva Kendra, Dimapur, jointly organized International Youth Day celebration here at Community Education Centre Society School (CECSS).


President, Dimapur Naga Students’ Union, Sedevilie Angami, the special guest of the celebration in his address said International Youth Day has been observed since 1998 in recognition of the vital role of youth in shaping the destiny of a nation or society. The DNSU president said as per UN criteria of youth (15-24 years), the youth comprises of 1/6 of the world’s total population.


Dwelling on the theme of this year’s celebration ‘Transforming Education’, Sedevilie said in the present context education is not merely attainment of bookish knowledge but more importantly, acquiring skills and how to keep pace with advancement in technologies.


He said everyone is born with a talent and one important aspect of education is to bring out the best of each person’s talent or potential.


“Education today should combine knowledge, life skills and critical thinking. Education should bring out the potential of a student and develop the skills,” he said and added students “need to learn how to learn.”


The DNSU president further said young people need space and an environment where they can freely express their views and pursue their dreams.


Chief functionary, CAN Youth, Jenpu Rongmei, in his keynote address said in the present world, young people are living in an atmosphere of fear, tension and conflict, with society, family and within oneself.


He said the observance of International Youth Day is a reminder of the enormous responsibilities and challenges that the youth have to overcome. On the theme “Transforming education”, Jenpu said education should not be viewed as a means to get plump jobs or lead luxurious lives but rather as a key to understand the value of humanity, love and relationship. He said the main objective of education should be how to teach a person to become a good and responsible citizen.  The CAN Youth chief functionary also reminded that though Nagaland State has a high literacy rate, but the rate of school drop outs is also equally high.


The main highlights of the day were the extempore and slogan writing competitions among students of CECSS. In the extempore, Wongshiba, Yantsula and Minakshi bagged the first, second and third positions respectively, while Tongpang, Thangam and Rahul Das emerged first, second and third in slogan writing.
