Tsurangkong Senso Senden opposes oil exploration on ancestral land

Mokokchung, February 1 (MExN): The Tzürangkong Senso Senden has opposed alleged attempts by the Assam government, with support from the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, to allot ancestral land of the Ao Naga community to Vedanta for oil exploration and drilling without their consent.

In a statement, the Senso Senden asserted that the Tsurangkong Range, which borders Assam, is the traditional land of the Ao Naga community of Mokokchung district, Nagaland. It claimed that on November 15, 2024, officials from Assam, including the Border Magistrate and District Forest Officer, along with representatives from the Union Ministry and Vedanta, attempted to inspect the area without prior knowledge or consent of the landowners but were turned away.

The Senso Senden made it clear that no exploration, drilling, or extraction of natural resources would be permitted in Tsurangkong without a valid agreement with the ancestral landowners.

The statement was issued by Tzürangkong Senso Senden President Moa Kichu and Secretary Chuba Pongen.
