At least two protesters were injured after police resorted to firing tear gas shells to disperse a protest rally which was heading for the Deputy Commissioner's office in Thoubal district of Manipur on Monday. The protesters were demanding prompt action on the part of the police to arrest the culprit(s) behind the alleged murder of a four-year-old boy.
Under the aegis of joint action committee (JAC) formed in connection with the alleged murder of the four-year-old boy, a large number people carried out the protest rally on the streets at the district headquarters. The rally kick-started from a community hall at Moijing locality marched towards the Thoubal DC office. However, they were blocked by a large number of police armed with riot gears before reaching the DC office.
As the protesters attempted to proceed further, police fired several rounds of tear gas shells, injuring at least two protesters including the convener of the JAC, Md Akbar.
Mention may be made here that the body of the four-year-old boy was found in a pond located near his house in the morning of January 24 after he went missing on January 19. Family as well as locals suspected that the boy was murdered by those who kidnapped him. The lifeless body of the boy is still lying at RIMS morgue as an unclaimed body.
The police have also arrested two suspects even as the alleged main culprit(s) is still at large.
