Two from Nagaland awarded Padma Shri

New Delhi, March 20 (MExN): Two people from Nagaland were presented the Padma Shri Award by the President of India Ram Nath Kovind at a Civil Investiture Ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on March 20.  

M Piyongtemjen Jamir was presented Padma Shri in the field of Literature & Education. Citation to the Padma Awards informed that Jamir is a Hindi scholar and teacher in Nagaland, who has taught over 4,000 students – 1,000 of whom are Hindi teachers today.

Lentina Ao Thakkar  receives the Padma Shri from President of India on March 20.

  Meanwhile, Lentina Ao Thakkar, a Gandhian who has served for decades at Gandhi Ashram in Chuchuyimlang village, was awarded the Padma Shri in the field of Social Work. She is described as someone who has “demonstrated extraordinary courage to embrace Gandhi and work on his name in the Naga Hills, more so in the charged 1950s.”  

The President of India presented the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri Awards at the ceremony on March 20.   One of the highest civilian awards of the country, the awards are given in different fields and disciplines such as art, literature and education, sports, medicine, social work, science and engineering, public affairs, civil service, trade and industry.

As many as 84 Padma awards were announced in 2018 comprising of three Padma Vibhushan, nine Padma Bhushan, and 72 Padma Shri.
