DIMAPUR, JANUARY 10 (MExN): The Tangkhul Welfare Society Mumbai (TWSM) has condemned the actions of the Manipur Government to create 7 new districts in the state without consulting the Hill Areas Committee, and for failing to resolve the issue amicably. It stated that the Manipur Government has dishonoured the four memorandum of understanding signed between the various Naga civil society bodies and the Manipur government. The TWSM stated that this was a move for the government to gain political mileage. A press note from the TWSM condemned the arrest of Naga United Council (UNC) President Gaidon Kanter and Publicity Secretary Stephen Lamkang on November 25, 2016; “divide & rule policy by creating of seven new districts without consulting the Hill Areas Committee; vandalisation of more than 45 vehicles by mob While acknowledging that the economic blockade imposed in protest against the government’s action has affected the community in Manipur, the TWSM however said that the UNC imposed the blockade to draw the attention of the government and resolve the issue. It asked all communities in Manipur to understand that the “fight is between the Government of Manipur and Nagas.” “We should not create communal hatred and enmity but pressurise the State Government to resolve the issues at the earliest,” the TWSM urged.
