Nagaland’s opposition-less Government—the United Democratic Alliance held its first official meeting on Tuesday, during which it addressed the contentious issue of relocation of Dimapur Deputy Commissioner’s office to Chümoukedima, among others.

Following the meeting, it was informed that a corrigendum will be issued on the matter.

It may be noted that subsequent to the state government’s notification to relocate certain offices to the new location, several Dimapur-based civil society organisations (CSOs) expressed strong resentment. The CSOs submitted an ultimatum demanding that the government reconsider the move and revoke the notification which was issued through the Principal Secretary for Home Department on September 7. A public rally was also organised in Dimapur Tuesday.

Talking to media personnel after the meeting which was held at Chief Minister’s residential complex, Home Minister Yanthungo Patton said “there was something wrong in the notification, because in the Cabinet, we didn’t finalise about shifting of DC office.”

Patton, who is also the Deputy Chief Minister, informed that discussion on this issue was held with the five legislators from Dimapur, and was further discussed in today’s meeting. He said, the Cabinet on August 10 had decided to shift only the ADC and Sub Treasury office to Chümoukedima.

However, “The notification that came out was a bit different from the Cabinet decision that was taken on August 10,” he added.

Resolutions on Naga Peace talks

Meanwhile, the UDA adopted a 4-point resolution on the ongoing Naga Peace Talks where it appreciated “the serious commitment of the Government of India towards the Indo-Naga peace process, and welcomed the positive steps taken by the GoI on matters to the ongoing Indo-Naga political dialogue which include the appointment of a single person as interlocutor with all the negotiating parties.”

The house has also appreciated resumption of talks and the decision of the Naga political groups to resume the peace process by proceeding to New Delhi for continuation of the negotiating process.

While acknowledging the desire and feeling of the Naga people which has been expressed through consultative meetings and resolutions calling for an early, honourable, acceptable and inclusive solution, the UDA upholds the resolutions of the civil societies, the Nagaland Legislative Assembly and the series of consultative meetings, it said.

In this regard, UDA government has appealed the negotiating parties to respond to the cry of the people and bring the protracted Indo-Naga political issue to its logical conclusion at the earliest possible.

“The UDA resolved to make every possible effort to play the role of active facilitator towards the peace process and the ongoing negotiations” and appealed all sections to continue to work towards unity, reconciliation and oneness in order to prepare a positive landing ground for the long awaited solution.

When enquired, Patton said there was no discussion on sharing of portfolio with the NPF legislators. Besides, meeting the 7 NNPGs within this month, he informed that the Core Committee will be leaving for Delhi soon to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
