The United Naga Council (UNC) has vehemently condemned the “heinous crime” allegedly committed by an unruly mob against four Tangkhul Naga girls at Imphal’s Kwakeithel Bazaar on May 24. They were reportedly on their way to Tuhilal International Airport to catch a flight to Mumbai.

In a statement issued today, the UNC expressed its concern over the worsening law and order situation in Manipur despite constant appeals from Naga civil society organisations for peace and normalcy.

The frequent occurrence of arson, killings, and harassment at various places, along with the incident at Kwakeithel Bazaar, despite the promulgation of 355, indicates that the rule of law is at very low ebb, the Council maintained.

The UNC claimed that the incident involving the four innocent girls from Namrei village, Chingai sub-division, Ukhrul district, took place in broad daylight and is not an isolated case of mob culture.

According to the UNC, the girls were “forcibly dragged down from an autorickshaw, assaulted with an iron rod” and their shirts were torn and two luggages were destroyed in the process.

It further charged the “security personnel on duty” of being a mute spectator to the whole incident.

“As reported, one among the men in uniform loaded the gun and threatened them not to move further”, the UNC further alleged.

The UNC also condemned the “ill-conceived motive of an organisation for dragging the name of the UNC in a press briefing aftermath the incident without the knowledge and consent of the Council”.

“For good or bad, taking the name of any organisation without the former’s knowledge is a serious crime. Henceforth, person(s) involved is advised not to repeat such reckless mistake in future,” it added.
