Dimapur | October 7
residents of Nagarjan seem to be the most satisfied people in the district of Dimapur as all the people, whom this reporter met, expressed nothing but the peacefulness of the village.
The monolith in the heart of the village reads, ‘To the memory of Nimedo Kasakhire, Rokokerhe Liegise, Ketholelhou Khate, who through the grace of God founded the Nagarjan ‘B’ village in the year 1945.
However, there are still doubts with regard to the name ‘Nagarjan’ and how it came about. According to a senior citizen of the village, Neikemhiezo Yhor, he said that the name ‘nagarja’ means ‘the habitat of the Nagas’, and another theory is that the name came about because the word ‘nagar’ means ‘streams’ in Assamese.
“There is no clear conclusion regarding the nomenclature of ‘Nagarjan,’” he added. His wife Ketheolebino Angami, who has been teaching in the village government primary school for the last twenty years, when asked about life in the village said that till now the atmosphere in the village is very calm, “I think” she adds quickly. “Through God’s grace the people who are coming to this village are very peace loving, indeed. There are no wine sellers or that kind of immoral people also,’ she said.
“Comparing to other places,” a shopkeeper, who wished not to be named, said, “Nagarjan is quite good. Here the rent is also very low and the area is also very calm.” He rued that there is shortage of water and heavy load- shedding of electricity though.
However, the beauty of Nagarjan as a beautiful place is still undiluted because of the big trees, the easy going people and the air of serenity.
It may be noted that the village has a big lawn tennis court maintained by the Nagaland Tennis Association, where people from the village and adjoining areas use for practice. Green Wood Higher Secondary School, a premier educational institute in the state is also placed in the village. Perhaps, Nagarjan might best describe a place which is quite ‘far from the madding crowd’.
