Uneasy calm remained along the Assam-Nagaland border days after the issue of a “land clearance” created tense situation in Amguri-Tuli sector.

On Tuesday, official source said that “Necessary prompt action” of the administration and Security forces under Tuli Division has "contained the tense situation for the time being.”

The tension, as per the report received here, erupted when a group of “Assamese people along with the security provided by Assam Police personnel and Administration of Sivasagar District” started clearing land for setting up of Police Outpost at a spot located at Watiyongpang Nagaland Gate on July 23.

The Guwahati based daily, The Sentinel, reported that the move was to set up Assam Police’s Board of Probations outpost.

However, the Wameken Village Council has claimed that the spot is its traditional Jhum area and “as a legitimate landowner, the Wameken Citizen en-mass drive out the encroachers” enhancing “the tension in the area” on July 24.

On July 25, an official from Tuli Administration on the condition of anonymity informed there were no untoward incidents on Wednesday but an “uneasy calm” prevailed.

“It is normal for time being but if the Nagaland Government does not take any initiative at the high level with Assam counterpart, tension might erupt anytime,” the official said. “The resolution of boundary issue is a must.”
