Union Govt can play pivotal role in power deficit States like Nagaland: NLA speaker

Kohima, August 2 (MExN): The Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) Speaker, Sharingain Longkumer has said that the Union Government, through the Ministry of Power can play a pivotal role by formulating of exceptional special power purchase rates for the power deficit States of the North-East region like Mizoram, Meghalaya and Nagaland. 

He stated this while stressing on the importance of regional connectivity and regional strengthening in the context of generation of energy, especially renewable energy. 

As all connectivity activities require energy, and by doing so, such States can leverage the power purchase savings to enhance production/generation/up-gradation of more renewable energy generation, he noted, while taking part in the Plenary Session and Deliberations in the 

20th Annual Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) India Region, Zone-III held in Shillong from July 30-August 1.

This would create conducive environment for the States to contribute and participate towards the country’s Vision and target in terms of Energy requisite, Longkumer added, stressing on the importance of regional connectivity and regional strengthening in the context of generation of energy, especially renewable energy. 

As per estimates of the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, the North East Region has the accumulated potential to generate nearly 129 Giga watts of green energy. 

To this end, the NLA Speaker apprised on the Union Government on the urgent need to support and frame supplementary policies with regard to Energy sufficiency and generation of renewable energy in the NE Region with special emphasis on strengthening regional economy and connectivity. 

A press release from the NLA Secretariat informed that apart from the NLA Speaker, KG Kenye, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs & Power; Wezope Kenye, Commissioner & Secretary, Parliamentary Affairs; Khruohituonuo Rio, Secretary-In-Charge, NLA; and some other NLA Secretariat Officials attended the conference.

The Speaker of Lok Sabha Om Birla gave the inaugural address of the conference.
