
DIMAPUR, AUGUST 22 (MExN): After the heavy landslide and mudslide at the Kohima-Zunheboto highway between Chetheba and Chakhabama, the highway has been completely cut off from the state capital since August 12. In this connection, the Thenyizumi Village undertook road repairing on Tuesday at the affected areas.
The Thenyizumi village council along with women society, youth organization, students union and intellectuals temporarily restored the road which was totally blocked since August 12.
It may be mentioned that Chokri area under Phek district i.e Chetheba Town, Thenyizumi village, K.Basa, K.Bawe, Chesezu Village, Chesezu Nasa, Phuyoba and partially Thipuzu village has been facing untold sufferings for weeks after the heavy landslide at Keyurü near Sedzu River (some 40 kilometers from Kohima) and heavy mudslide near old GREF camp (the road between Chakhabama and Chetheba area).
Thenyizumi village on Tuesday hired a JCB on VDB fund and manpower in order to clear the road for vehicular movement which actually should have been carried out by the State Government.
Thenyizumi Village Council Chairman Zhothiyi Dawhuo said that the PWD officials also visited the affected areas, however due to insufficient resources the work could not progress. He also said after the initiation of two land projects, the village has had major restorations work four times in their jurisdiction.
After the social work, the VCC also informed that the road was cleared for light vehicular movements from Tuesday evening onwards.
Thenyizumi Youth Social Welfare Organization in a press release requested the concerned authority to restore the highway early as people of the region are suffering. It also informed that the villagers are doing their best to restore the highway pliable with little resources available from their end.
It may be mentioned that the State highway and the development of this stretch into a two lane was taken up under the SARDP-NE (Special Accelerated Road Development Programme – North-East). The total amount sanctioned till 2012 was Rs. 1222Cr. Subsequently, the earth-cutting work had started only to come to an abrupt halt in June 2012 for undisclosed reasons.
