Violence suspected to be election related was reported from Tuli, Mokokchung today. According to reports, two groups of people clashed during the day at the 21 Mile area. While there was no official confirmation of any casualty, stone-pelting between the clashers was said to have occurred. Pictures circulating in social media further showed vehicles vandalised and burned.

A Mokokchung district administration official while confirming the incident though denied the day’s clash to have been related to the upcoming Assembly elections. As per the official, the incident occurred as members of the Merangkong village Putu Menden (village council) were proceeding to Tuli “to initiate customary action against 21 people of the same village… who were camping at Tuli.” It was not specified as to the reasons behind the “customary action” however the official attributed it to “village internal issue.”

Stating that the situation was under control, the official added that additional police deployment was requisitioned. A company of NAP (IR) was expected to reach Mokokchung by Tuesday evening. “We will be deploying them as soon as they reach to stop any untoward incident,” the official said.   Several attempts to contact the ADC, Tuli and the Tuli police remained unanswered.
