The Wokha District Legal Services Authority (WDLSA) organised a walkathon to raise awareness on legal services, the eradication of drug abuse, child abuse, and gender-based violence. The event was part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence and the Nari Chetna 3.0 (Gender Campaign), which commenced on November 25.
The walkathon began at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Wokha and concluded at the District Court. A brief flagging-off ceremony was held at the DC complex before the event.
The District and Sessions Judge and Chairperson of WDLSA, Nino Iralu, emphasised the significance of the walkathon, noting that despite its short distance, it carried a powerful message for society. Iralu urged all present to pledge their support in assisting addicts and actively participating in efforts to eradicate drug abuse, and to fight against child abuse and gender-based violence.
In her address, Iralu highlighted the importance of determination and dedication in helping those struggling with addiction. She stressed that addicts require not only rehabilitation and detoxification programmes but also ongoing love, care, and motivation to recover.
Iralu called on civil society organisations to establish rehabilitation centres and urged citizens to commit to providing counselling and support to those affected by addiction. She emphasised the need for collective action, reaffirming that the community must work together to tackle the growing issue of drug abuse.
Mission Shakti DPO/DNO, N Ekonthung Kikon, addressed the gathering, highlighting various societal issues, including the marriage of underage children. He pointed out the health risks associated with early marriage, such as cancer, and noted the rising instances of divorce and financial burdens, such as debts, which often drive individuals toward substance abuse. Kikon called for greater awareness and collective action to address these challenges and urged citizens to support one another in combating social ills.
The walkathon was flagged off by ADC Wokha, Renpomo Ezung. The programme was moderated by Panel Lawyer Shanchobeni P Lotha, and was attended by representatives from various departments and CSOs.
