WOKHA, DECEMBER 19 (MExN): WDCA and Hill Strikers registered convincing wins in the ongoing Winter Cricket Challenge (WCC) T20 2025–26 at Wokha public ground on Friday.
In the first match, WDCA won the toss and elected to bat, posting a massive 224 for six in 20 overs. Rahul anchored the innings with a fine 95, while Prachujya remained unbeaten on 61. Liren chipped in with 20 runs.
Chasing the target, GAPYOCC got off to a steady start through openers Nyanthung (32) and Lanvung (35), who added 60 runs, but the batting collapsed thereafter as the side finished 84 runs short. Rahul was named man of the match.
In the second fixture, Hill Strikers, after opting to bat, piled up 242 for five in 20 overs. Nchumthung struck 63, Chiben scored 36, while Suben played a blistering knock of 64 not out off just 22 balls, hitting four fours and seven sixes.
Gracious Event Planning CC struggled in reply and were restricted to 100 for six in their allotted overs. Hill Strikers bowlers maintained disciplined spells to seal a comprehensive victory. Suben was adjudged man of the match.
Tournament inauguration report
The 30th edition of the Winter Cricket Challenge, Nagaland’s oldest locally organised cricket tournament, began at Wokha public ground on December 18.
Formerly organised by Senior Noble Klan (SNK) and now managed by the Nagaland Cricket Association (NCA), the tournament was inaugurated by NCA honorary secretary Hyunilo Anilo Khing.
Addressing the gathering, Khing lauded the organisers and cricket fraternity of Wokha for sustaining the tournament for three decades and called for the inclusion of women’s matches in future editions, citing the district’s contribution to women’s state-level cricket.
On the occasion, he also inaugurated Wokha’s first mini indoor all-weather practice pitch, constructed under the BCCI cricket development project.
Wokha District Sports Association president Yanren Humtsoe urged continued efforts to promote cricket in the district. MLA of 38 Wokha Assembly Constituency Y. Mhonbemo Humtsoe, who also attended the event, said the tournament had helped revive the age-old sporting bond between the Ahom and Naga communities.
The Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police, Wokha DEF, assured support from the administration, with the aim of making the tournament an annual fixture.
The opening fixture featured a friendly Assam–Nagaland clash under the Assam–Nagaland Friendship Trophy. Batting first, Golaghat, Assam scored 145 for six in 15 overs. Nagaland replied with 133 for six, falling short by 12 runs despite Yanren Ngullie’s 48. Shamango Lochan Sharma of Assam, who scored an unbeaten 50, was named man of the match as Assam retained the 3rd Assam–Nagaland Friendship Trophy.
