WCS India holds training on ‘Counter wildlife trafficking’ 

Wokha, September 6 (MExN): A two-day training programme on ‘counter wildlife trafficking’ organized by Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) India in collaboration with Wokha Forest Division began at the DC Conference Hall, Wokha on September 5. 


A press release issued by Lansothung Lotha, Member, IUCN SSC Hornbill Specialist Group stated that during the inaugural session, Chonpenthung Ezung, SDO Civil, Wokha HQ shared on the need to do away with the age-old trend of associating hunting with pride and to start conserving our heritage. 


DP Bankhwal, IFS (Retd), former PCCF and Chief Wildlife Warden, Assam in his speech stressed on the need for different departments to work together in order to prevent as well as curb wildlife trafficking. 


The other resource persons from WCS-India were Sahila Kudalkar, Program Manager, Mridula Vijairaghavan, Legal Advisor and Anirban Chaudhari, Training Coordinator. 


Sessions on the first day included topics on Introduction to Illegal Wildlife Trade, Relevant Provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act (1972) pertaining to IWT, Search and Seizure, and Wildlife Offence Report. 


The sessions for September 6 included Mock Crime Scene, Interactive Review, Complaint, and Identification of Commonly Trafficked Parts and Products. 


The programme saw participation from the District Administration, Police and Forest Department. Officers who attended the training programme were Seyiekhrietuo Solo, EAS Sanis, Imtinungla Longkumer, EAC Englan, Molonsangla Ozukum, EAC (P), I. Yentinoungbou, EAC (P), and Marsosang, OC. Sungro PS.
