There was complete closure of the town’s commercial establishments, with the exception of pharmacies which were allowed to remain open during the indefinite shutter down called by the Wokha District Chamber of Commerce and Industry (WDCCI) on Monday.
In response, the Wokha Town Council (WTC) issued a directive mandating all shops to remain open, citing the adverse effects on consumers and the livelihoods of daily-wage earners.
Chairperson Khozamo Lotha stated that any failure to comply with the directive could lead to action under the Nagaland Municipal Act 2023.
While the WTC clarified that its directive was not intended to oppose the WDCCI, it voiced concern over the growing inconvenience caused to the general public by the continued shutdown.
With contrasting directives, there was confusion before the WDCCI called off the shutter down stir following an announcement by the Confederation of Nagaland Chambers of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI) in the evening.
