Land Preparation and Pit digging for Arecanut Plantation: Select site with deep (not less than 2m), well-drained soil, without high water table and provision for irrigation. Plant tall, quick growing shaded trees on the southern and western sides of the plantation to provide protection from sun-scorching.

Pits of 80cm x 80cm x80cm size are dug at a spacing 2.7m x2.7m with North-South alignment. The pits may be filled with top soil to a height of 15cm from bottom. FYM/ compost @ 12kg/palm/year need to be mixed properly in the pits with the top soil. In acid soils, lime @ 0.5g/palm/year once in 2 years needs to be incorporated by forking during April- May.

1.  Renovation works like pond excavation, strengthening of embankment and side slopes, etc. should be done before the onset of pre-monsoon.  A provision of outlet can be made to check overflow of water during heavy rainfall.

2.     After minor renovation work, allow the pond bottom to dry. Apply powdered lime over dry surface of the pond bottom @ 130 kg/ha. Wait till the pond is filled with water for further operation. If complete removal of water is not possible, make sure that all fish are harvested. Thereafter, apply lime by first dissolving in water in a container and then spray over the water surface. Lime helps in checking the soil/water pH. For better fish growth a pH range of 7 – 8.5 is recommended.

3.     Apply cowdung@1 ton/ha after 10 days of lime application. The cow dung should be placed at one corner of the pond so that it dissolves slowly.

4.     After 7-10 days, apply urea @ 25 kg/ha and Single Super Phosphate (SSP) @ 20 kg/ha. Urea and SSP can be mixed together with pond mud and the mixture should be placed at different spots of the pond bottom.
