Wildlife seized along National Highway disposed

Dimapur, February 26 (MExN): The Wildlife Crime Control Unit, Dimapur on February 26 disposed the wildlife items that had been seized along NH 29. According to a press release received here, the seized wildlife included one leopard cat, one civet cat, two drongo, one parrot and three other birds. The animals and birds were burnt and buried at the office complex in the presence of officials and staffs of the department.   Meanwhile, the Unit in the release has urged the public to abstain from hunting and trading of wildlife animals and birds as such offence can invite fine or imprisonment or both as per Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.

It further urged the Village Council Chairmen and GBs to control the trade of wildlife items in their respective jurisdiction, while reminding that the various government grants and assistance will be curtailed for those villages which indulge in wildlife crimes.   At the same time, the Wildlife Crime Control Unit requested the customers and purchasers, “mostly rich and educated people”, not to encourage such activities by purchasing any wild animals. It reminded that such acts are also equal partners in wildlife crimes.
