The Mizoram government said it will not withdraw its security forces from the trouble-hit Assam and Mizoram border as long as problems prevail.

This information was disclosed by Mizoram Home minister Lalchamliana on Thursday. The Home minister said the Mizoram government can withdraw its forces only when normalcy returns.

On Wednesday, the Cachar district administration of Assam had reportedly asked the Mizoram government to withdraw its security forces from the border areas.

The Minister said the Mizoram government has accepted the demarcation notified in 1875 under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation (BEFR) of 1873 as the actual boundary of Mizoram and Assam. According to him, it is a “historical boundary of the state which has been accepted since the forefathers of Mizos.”

Lalchamliana stated that people from Lailapur had imposed blockade on National Highway-306 at Lailapur and highways linking Mizoram’s Bairabi village with Assam's Hailaikandi district since Wednesday. The minister went on to add that the issue should not be seen through a communal line.

He stressed that residents from both the sides of the border should live in harmony. “It is not a communal issue,” he added.

The Mizoram Home minister also said the state government is trying its best so that the transportation of essential commodities is not affected.
