The BJP Youth Wing, Wokha, has called for urgent measures to protect and develop Tsumang Lake, citing growing concerns over indiscriminate dumping of waste and the deteriorating condition of the water body.

It raised the issue during a cleanliness drive at the lake on Sunday, describing Tsumang Lake as an ecological landmark of Wokha town and stressing its potential as a public recreational and revenue-generating site if properly maintained.

BJP Youth Wing Wokha president Shanchothung A Ezung said the lake had remained neglected for several years and had accumulated plastic, paper, animal carcasses and other waste.

Around 30-40 volunteers took part in the cleanliness drive, clearing grass and collecting waste from the lake and its surroundings.

Ezung urged the public to stop dumping garbage at the site and appealed to the government to include the lake’s development and protection in the District Planning and Development Board (DPDB).

He also called for regular surveillance of the area to prevent littering and other activities that could affect the lake’s ecosystem. While stating that it was not opposed to fishing, Ezung expressed concern over the use of fishing nets that could damage the lake’s ecosystem.

“Maybe there can be some surveillance of the area,” Ezung said, suggesting that regular checks could help prevent activities that may harm the lake or disturb its surroundings.

Ezung said the youth wing would continue the initiative and work towards making the cleanliness drive an annual activity. He said the youth wing had previously undertaken similar cleanliness efforts and had also organised medical camps, seed distribution programmes and awareness workshops on government schemes and benefits.

The drive was supported by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), which provided a boat and life jackets, while the Wokha Town Council provided a garbage truck.

The BJP Youth Wing thanked State Youth President Khekato Awomi and National Executive Member Arvind Damani for sponsoring the cleanliness drive. It also thanked Town Councillor James Tungoe for refreshments and Urban Crew Car Rentals for transportation. It acknowledged the continued support of the Wokha Town Council and SDRF Wokha.
