Wokha district joined the rest of the country in celebrating the 80th Independence Day at the Local Ground, Wokha on August 15, with Advisor for Agriculture, Government of Nagaland, Mhathung Yanthan, as the special guest.
The day-long observance began at 6:00 a.m. with the hoisting of the National Flag across government offices, institutions, official residences, private residences, shops and business establishments.
At 7:00 a.m., institutional visits were conducted to the Senior Citizens Home under Wokha IRCS, Founding Harbour Children’s Home supported by Team Metamorphosis, Morning Star Children’s Home under WDCCI, District Jail through the Lotha Eloe Hoho, and Dr Motsuo Memorial District Hospital, where SBI Wokha Main Branch participated in the outreach.
Following the National Song, Yanthan hoisted the National Flag and took the Rashtriya Salute as the National Anthem was played. He subsequently inspected the parade contingents and delivered the Independence Day address.
District awards and commendation certificates were also presented in recognition of outstanding performance in work culture and assigned duties and responsibilities, as recommended by the District Level Committee for District Awards.
The District Award recipients were Thunglamo Humtsoe, Operator, Office of the District Public Relations Officer, and Yanpothung Mozhui, Peon, Office of the District Agriculture Officer.
Commendation certificates were awarded to T Nchumbeni Lotha, UDA, Office of the Deputy Commissioner; Dziesengunuo Dominica Solo, Staff Nurse, Dr Motsuo Memorial District Hospital; Chuba Ezung, Sanitation Driver, Wokha Town Council; and Khehoe Sema, MTS, Office of the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Bhandari.
The parade featured contingents from DEF Wokha, 7th NAP, Home Guards, NCC 24th Nagaland Battalion, NCC Mt Tiyi College, Ex-Servicemen, Scouts and Guides, DBHSS Wokha, Santsuo School, Fernbrook School, Isaiah Ability School, Cistus School, Springdale School and Perennial School, Wokha. The Fernbrook School Band Party provided the band accompaniment.
The parade was commanded by SDPO Wokha, Sangthing Khiam, NPS, with ABSI Mhabemo Ngullie, DEF Wokha, as Parade 2IC and Havildar Y Robin Lotha, DEF Wokha, as Parade CHM.
The cultural programme featured the folk song ‘Lijon Ro-jon Enyan’ presented by the Female Cultural Club, Wokha Village, and the folk dance ‘Ekhyo Shari’ performed by Fernbrook School, Wokha.
The special guest also inaugurated stalls showcasing products, services and initiatives of various departments, institutions, farmers’ groups, SHGs and village-level organisations. Participating stalls included KVK Wokha, ATMA Wokha, Agriculture and Horticulture departments, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, Department of Social Welfare, Wokha District Legal Services Authority, Medical Team Wokha, District Economic & Statistics, Wokha Circle Federation, Divisional Management Unit, BMMU Chukitong, DEF Wokha and several SHGs and VLOs.
The celebration later featured an exhibition Sepak Takraw match between Carmel Boys and Isaiah Hostellers, followed by prize distribution and the Beating of Retreat by DEF Wokha at 4:00 p.m.
The programme concluded with the Beating of Retreat, marking the close of the district’s 80th Independence Day observance.
