Introduction of taxi meter system on the cards

Parliamentary Secretary for Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection, T. Torechu today stated that the department helps consumers to know their rights. Speaking at the felicitation programme organized by the department at its conference hall here, Torechu said, “The department may be small, but it is a working department which helps consumers to know their rights and also businessmen to maintain proper rates of various consumer goods.” He expressed hope that though a small department, they could help bring big changes in society.

Torechu while seeking cooperation and support of department officials said, “Let us work cohesively for change not only verbally, but through our activities and deeds.” He also requested the officers and staff of the Directorate to set an example for the district offices to emulate.

Highlighting the departmental activities, Commissioner & Secretary K. T. Sukhalu informed that the department is setting up standard laboratories through the Centrally Sponsored Scheme in every district to monitor the rates of goods, including quality, weights and measures. He also informed that the revenue collection of the department has improved to a great extent during the last few years.

Sukhalu also requested the officers to strictly monitor petrol dispensing units “as there have been complaints on the quality and measurement.” He further requested the Parliamentary Secretary to expedite the process of establishing district forums and create posts for Peren, Kiphire and Longleng districts. 

Meanwhile, Joint Controller of the Department, Bizo M. Kuotsu in his speech apprised that the department is contemplating the verification of electricity and water meters. He also informed that it is mulling to introduce taxi meters as there is no authority to regulate the distances covered by taxis.
